Your habits mean more than just chewed off fingernails

Can you remember a time where you started a new project or hobby? The joy that filled your body that came from doing that project? The awesome feeling that came with having a sense of purpose? But yet, after a while, your internal fire started to dwindle. Your drive disappeared.

And all of a sudden, the project that you were so happy to start has become a burden. You find it hard to do what you know needs doing. Alas, you now reach the crossroads of quitting or soldiering on.

Before you quit, it’s important to remember (As you already know), the choices we make add to the overall picture of our lives. The choice you make at this crossroad will reinforce something. The question is, what?

Winners win, Quitters quit!

Former American football player, coach, and executive in the National Football League, Vince Lombardi said it best:

"Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit."

One can only imagine the number of body-breaking days at the office he had to endure playing in the NFL. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to assume that he felt like hanging up the boots for good several times. But he knew something that a lot of us may not have been aware of. Quitting is as much of a habit as is taking a task to completion. If you quit in one thing that will seep into other areas of your life.

If you are familiar with how the brain works then recognise that quitting has everything to do with neural pathways in the brain. For example, if you choose to eat a piece of chocolate cake when you know it's not part of your diet plan, your brain will register that, and a neural pathway will be formed. The more you repeat that action the stronger the pathway will become. This is to the point where it will become difficult for you to resist the chocolate cake because your biology has adapted to your decision.

Likewise, the same can be said for deciding to continue on. When you reach that crossroad, if you persist through the pain, you will build the habit of not giving up. A quite powerful habit to have.

What would your life would be like if you keep going, and don't quit when things get hard?

Making the decision to ‘Finish what you started’ is actually deciding to keep your promises to yourself in all areas of your life.

At Finish What You Start, we will do a deep dive on these and many other principles that will enable you to achieve your dreams and goals.
